Hitch Ball Mounts 101:

An essential accessory when purchasing a receiver hitch is a ball mount. This accessory is designed to insert into the square tube found in a receiver hitch. The ball mount has a 3/4 inch or 1 inch hole to mount a hitch ball into. The size of the reciever opening can vary from 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 inch (Class 1 & 2 hitches), 2 inch x 2 inch (Class 3, 4 and 5 hitches) to 2.5" x 2.5" (Heavy Duty Class 5).

How to measure for the proper amount of drop?
Ball mounts are available in various amounts of drop. The goal is to make your trailer sit level while towing. The easiest way to determine the correct height is to measure from the ground to the top of the receiver hitch. Then while your trailer is level measure to the bottom of the coupler (17 inch is most common). Then just calculate the difference between the two heights. That will give you the amount of drop (or rise) you will need.
