Weight distributing hitches are designed to increase the capacity of the towing system when added to a Class III, IV or V trailer hitch. The concept of a weight distributing hitch is similar to that of a wheelbarrow: long handles provide leverage and transfer the load forward onto the front tire. The weight distributing hitch works by leverage, transferring 1/3 of the weight to the front wheels of the tow vehicle, 1/3 of the weight to the trailer wheels, and leaving 1/3 on the hitch ball/back wheels of the tow vehicle.
